JOIN OUR CHAIN

The End FGM European umbrella Network (End FGM EU) gather 39 NGOs to ensure sustainable European action to end female genital mutilation.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) and early and forced marriage (EFM) are widespread forms of gender-based violence, even in Europe. Professionals in contact with those affected can often feel powerless.

To help professionals better identify and support women and girls at risk or affected by FGM and EFM, the End FGM EU Network and its partners Akidwa (Ireland), Terre des Femmes (Germany) and Action Aid (Italy) have developed a protocol structured in three phases.

The concept of an intervention chain (IC) is central to this protocol. Each professional plays a crucial role, forming a link in a wider chain. The broader and stronger this chain, the better the care provided.

The video, available in three languages, aims to inform and encourage professionals in Ireland, Italy and Germany to adopt and integrate this protocol into their daily work.

What we did:

For this 2D animated video campaign in 3 languages, we synthesised and popularised the functioning of the intervention chain in the 3 countries. We also created a unique and original artistic direction to effectively convey the message to the relevant professionals and raise awareness on their intervention protocol to encourage professionals to join them.

We wanted to ensure that we dealt with the subject appropriately and that the video would be unanimously approved by the End FGM network and partners. But getting feedback from a large number of people at each key stage of the project is a challenge. Because each End FGM EU partner brings expertise and knowledge specific to each partner country. Thanks to our validation process at each stage of the project, we have been able to identify the key points which needed to be addressed in order to improve our approach to this sensitive subject. Following meetings involving the country supervisors, and to ensure the relevance of our approach, we designed a shared understanding survey with all End FGm Eu partners.

This survey and investigative work has enabled us to produce a powerful and inspiring ~3 min video that meets the challenge of addressing a wide range of audiences with very different professional backgrounds.
