DECIDE BY YOURSELF
GAMS
Founded in 1996 by Khadidiatou Diallo, the Group for the Abolition of Female Sexual Mutilation (GAMS Belgium) fights for the abolition of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Belgium and around the world. The GAMS Be team collaborates with affected communities and engages in prevention, support, professional training, and advocacy efforts.
As part of its fight to prevent female genital mutilation and to mark World Refugee Day (Thursday 20 June 2024), GAMS Belgium wanted to tell the inspiring story of its founder, Khadidiatou Diallo, and the importance of her role in this fight.
Because despite prevention efforts, the risk of excision in Europe or when travelling to the country of origin is always present.
The aim of this project - for women and girls who have undergone or are at risk of undergoing excision - is to encourage them to go to GAMS Be and take action for their own well-being, by feeling connected to the values of the association and identifying themselves with its founders. The video aims to provide a clear presentation of the association and its actions, enabling women and girls to understand what GAMS Be is, to seek help and to avoid disappointment.
What we did:
To tell the story of GAMS Be and its founder, Khadidiatou Diallo, and enable women and girls to identify with her and be encouraged to go to GAMS Be, we designed a unique and inspiring animated video with an immersive storytelling. We worked with Fabienne Richard, Director of GAMS Be, and her team to illustrate Khadidiatou Diallo's true story - demonstrating a deep understanding of the difficult ordeals faced by women and girls who are victims of genital mutilation (FGM) or forced marriage.
To involve the community, we worked with women affected by FGM in Belgium, in coordination with the GAMS Be team, to record the voice-overs in 8 different languages.
The video also highlights the various workshops, successes and support offered by GAMS Be.
