BIODIVERSE CITIES

IUCN

Working with many partners and supporters, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) implements a large and diverse portfolio of conservation projects worldwide. These projects combine the latest science with traditional knowledge of local communities to work to reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems and improve people’s well-being.

As part of the European cooperation programme Interreg North Sea 2021-2027, the Biodiverse Cities project aims to tackle the urgent biodiversity and climate crises in the cities of the North Sea region. The project brings together 8 cities and 8 expert organisations to support ecosystem services, balance the coexistence of people and nature, and build nature-inclusive societies.

Launched in 2022 and running until 2026, the project mobilises the pilot cities of Dordrecht, Växjo, Bremen, Aarhus and Lille to accelerate action for biodiversity by implementing urban investments programmes enriched with nature-based solutions (NbS). As well as the 'pollinator' cities: Hamburg, Brest and Bergen.

The solutions put in place include collecting naturalist data, creating eco-corridors and raising public awareness of biodiversity protection. Biodiverse Cities develops, demonstrates and monitors innovative solutions, while actively involving citizens in co-creation activities (Spatial Experimentation, temporarily transforming public spaces into green areas for community use, etc.) and community participation.

What we did:

The challenge was therefore to present an overview of the Biodiverse Cities project, while placing it in the context of the transformative changes needed to tackle the triple global crisis - climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. The aim was also to encourage people to find out more about the project.

In order to meet the main objective of presenting an overview of the Biodiverse Cities project, we have created a unique and original educational motion design video presenting the challenges facing urban areas and the solutions provided by the Biodiverse Cities project.
