JUNETEENTH

TED-Education

Today, Juneteenth carries deep significance when it comes to celebrating the end of slavery; the pursuit of freedom for all; and a continued commitment to remembering the past and dreaming of the future.

For more than two centuries, slavery defined what the United States would become, from its past as Britain's Thirteen Colonies to its growth as an independent country. Slavery fueled its cotton industry and made it a leading economic power.

Because official emancipation was a phased process, people in different places commemorated it on different dates. Those in Galveston, Texas, began celebrating "Juneteenth" - a combination of "June" and "nineteenth" - the anniversary of General Granger's announcement proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.
